This medication is often used with a low-dose aspirin to help prevent heart attack and stroke in people with heart disease or heart problems. It may also be used to prevent heart attack or stroke after certain surgeries.
Ticagrelor works by blocking the platelets from sticking together to form harmful clots. It helps to keep the blood flowing smoothly in the body to help reduce the risk of another cardiovascular event.
A heart attack or stroke may occur when a blood vessel in the heart or brain is blocked by a blood clot. Ticagrelor reduces the chance that a harmful blood clot will form by preventing certain cells in the blood from clumping together. This effect of ticagrelor may also increase the chance of serious bleeding in some people.
